What's your Chinese zodiac animal?

Enter a date of birth. The zodiac follows the lunar new year, which lands somewhere between 21 January and 20 February — so if you were born in January or early February, online quizzes usually get you wrong.

You are a Horse
为什么是这十二只动物? The order comes from a race. The animals crossed a river and the Jade Emperor ranked them by arrival. The rat won by riding on the ox's back and jumping off at the last moment — which tells you something about how Chinese culture regards cleverness versus effort. The pig came last because it stopped for a meal and a nap.
2026 这一年有点特别 The Year of the Horse began on 17 February 2026 and runs until 5 February 2027. This particular lunar year has no New Year's Eve on the 30th — the twelfth lunar month was short, so the eve falls on 16 February and the next day is already the new year. It also arrived unusually late: because 2025 carried a leap sixth month, Chinese New Year drifted nearly three weeks later than the year before.

Chinese zodiac compatibility: which signs get along

Four overlapping systems decide this. Two animals can be a perfect match in one and unremarkable in another — which is why a single "compatibility score" is always someone's invention.

先看一句实话 Everything below uses the birth year alone. That is one piece out of eight — a serious reading (八字) takes year, month, day and hour. Year-only matching is a map of temperaments, not a verdict on a person. Two animals that clash can have an excellent marriage; it just asks more of them.

六合 · The six secret friends

One-to-one pairs whose energies are said to complete each other. Each animal has exactly one.

鼠 Rat + 牛 Ox

Rat's quickness covers Ox's caution; Ox's steadiness anchors Rat's restlessness. The pair that quietly divides labour and stops arguing about it.

虎 Tiger + 猪 Pig

Tiger charges out into the world; Pig builds something warm to come back to. What Tiger needs isn't another Tiger — it's somewhere safe to land.

兔 Rabbit + 狗 Dog

Rabbit softens Dog's rigidity, and Dog's plain loyalty is what makes Rabbit feel safe. Often described as the most durable of the six, especially in friendships.

龙 Dragon + 鸡 Rooster

Dragon works at the scale of the whole plan; Rooster handles quality control and catches what was missed. Vision plus follow-through.

蛇 Snake + 猴 Monkey

Two strategists who never quite manage to underestimate each other. Mutual respect for the other's mind — and no tolerance for games.

马 Horse + 羊 Goat

Horse supplies the motion; Goat supplies the reason it was worth moving. Goat is also the only one who can make Horse slow down without a fight.

三合 · The four trines

Three animals sharing an element. Any two inside the same trine are considered to read each other's intentions unusually well.

鼠 · 龙 · 猴 水 Water

The strategists. One generates ideas, one scales them, one actually delivers them. Restless in the best way.

牛 · 蛇 · 鸡 金 Metal

The finishers. Slow to start, precise once moving, and quietly disdainful of people who don't complete things.

虎 · 马 · 狗 火 Fire

The activists. High output, quick decisions, and a shared need for room — put all three in one team and give them somewhere to go.

兔 · 羊 · 猪 木 Wood

The peacemakers. Artistic, agreeable, conflict-averse — so much so that difficult conversations can get postponed for years.

六冲 · The six clashes

Animals sitting exactly opposite each other on the zodiac ring — six years apart. Opposing temperament rather than bad character.

鼠 Rat × 马 Horse

Plans against impulse. Excellent at executing once pointed the same direction; slow to agree on which direction.

牛 Ox × 羊 Goat

Both stubborn, expressed differently — Ox digs in visibly, Goat simply refuses and outlasts you.

虎 Tiger × 猴 Monkey

The most electric of the six clashes and the most competitive. Two people convinced they should be leading.

兔 Rabbit × 鸡 Rooster

Indirect meets blunt. One reads it as avoiding the subject; the other reads it as tact. Neither is actually angry yet.

龙 Dragon × 狗 Dog

Both certain they are right, and frequently both right about different halves of the problem. Arguments about principle, not facts.

蛇 Snake × 猪 Pig

Privacy against candour. Snake reads the room; Pig walks straight into the middle of it. Requires agreeing what stays private.

还有两类,但别太当真 六害 (hidden harm) — 鼠羊、牛马、虎蛇、兔龙、猴猪、鸡狗. Described as slow erosion rather than open conflict: small repeated irritations, not dramatic rows. And 自刑 (self-punishment) applies to two of the same animal when the animal is the Dragon, Horse, Rooster or Pig — the idea being that your own blind spot doubles rather than balances. Both concepts are genuine parts of the system, and both are where practitioners disagree most.
